The Secret Place

As moms, we understand that the enemy has also issued commandments against our children. We also see the potential for greatness in our children even when no one else does. For years, I knew that the enemy was out to destroy my children and I constantly went to the Lord with it. I was forever “giving my children to the Lord,” and then turning around when something happened and taking them back.
That’s an exhausting way to live! Now that I understand who I am in Christ and all that He provided for me, I don’t “give” my children to the Lord. I “take” them to Him and teach them to “hide” in Him. How? I will share a story that will illustrate how the Lord has shown me to do this.
For years, thunderstorms have been a HUGE deal in the Clifford home. So at the first sign of lightning or thunder our girls were up on their dad’s lap, pleading to be able to make a bed on the floor in our room because they were scared.
My husband, being the softy that he is, would give in and the girls would bunk down for the night with us. As they’ve gotten older, we began to notice other “fearful” things beginning to crop up in their little lives.
At this point, being 7 and 5, I decided that they were old enough to understand who they were in Jesus. Using the Bowls as a visual, I explained to them what happened when they received Jesus as their Savior. Now they are in a place that the devil is afraid of and they now have authority over him. I explained that the devil didn’t want them to walk in Jesus, that his "job" was to get them out of their position and fear was the biggest tool he used.
We began to talk about this everyday, all day long, and how it related to everything. Then last fall, we had several nasty storms in a row. Each time we would talk to the girls about who they were in Christ. One night, Jim read them the first two verses of Psalm 91. He told them that the secret place was a secret hiding place from the devil and that it was as strong as a fortress.
Most of the time the girls now sleep right through thunderstorms, but sometimes the enemy gets the better of them and I find them at the edge of my bed in the middle of the night saying, “Mom, will you pray with me? The devil keeps giving me scary thoughts and I can’t sleep.”
What are they really saying? “Mom, will you help me hide?” Of course, my response is always “YES!”
