Old Man - New Man
A. Old Man - New Man
1. "Knowing
this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of
sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin."
(Romans 6:6)
a. We are now
married to another. "Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead
to the law by the Body of Christ, that ye should be married to
another, even to Him Who is raised from the dead, that we should
bring forth fruit unto God." (Romans 7:4)
2. "For he
that is dead is freed from sin." (Romans 6:7)
3. "Likewise
reckon ye also yourselves (old man/flesh man) to be dead indeed unto
sin, but (new man/spirit man) alive unto God through Jesus Christ
our Lord." (Romans 6:11)
4. "Let not
sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in
the lusts thereof." (Romans 6:12)
a. Remember,
the body of sin has been destroyed by the Body of Christ.
5. "Neither
yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin;
but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive (new man)
from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto
God." (Romans 6:13)
6. "For sin
shall not have dominion over you; for ye are not under the law, but
under grace." (Romans 6:14)
a. The old man
is always under the law of sin and death. The new man is under the
law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:2) - the law of
liberty in Christ Jesus
(James 1:25).
7. "That ye
put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is
corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the
spirit of your mind (put on the mind of Christ - 1 Corinthians
2:16); and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in
righteousness and true holiness." (Ephesians 4:22-24)
8. "If ye then
be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where
Christ sitteth on the right hand of God."
(Colossians 3:1)
a. He has
raised us up and made us sit together in heavenly places
IN CHRIST JESUS.
9. "Set your
affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are
dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God."
(Colossians
3:2, 3)
10."When
Christ Who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also
appear with Him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are
upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil
concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry."
(Colossians 3:4,
5)
a. This is
simply a choice of abiding. Choose you this day life or death,
blessing or cursing - Spirit or flesh (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20).
11."For which
things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience;
in the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them (not
abiding). But now ye also put off these (things of the old man);
anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your
mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old
man with his deeds." (Colossians
3:6-9)
12."And have
put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of
Him that created Him; where there is neither Greek, nor Jew,
circumcision nor un-circumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond or free;
but Christ is all, and in all."
(Colossians 3:10, 11)
a. Reference:
Galatians 3:26-29; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21; Acts 17:28.
13."Put on
therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies,
kindness, humbleness of mind (Christ's mind), meekness,
longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if
any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so
also do ye. And above all these things put on charity (love),
which is the bond of perfectness."
(Colossians 3:12-14)
a. Put on
love; put on "perfect love" which casts out all fear (1John 4:18).
Perfect love is Christ's Body - put on the new man.
14."And let
the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are
called in one body; and be ye thankful." (Colossians 3:15)
a. Jesus is our peace (Ephesians 2:14).
B. Outward Man - Inward Man
1. "For which
cause we faint not, but though our outward man perish, yet the
inward man is renewed day by day." (2 Corinthians 4:16)
2. "For our
light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far
more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." (2 Corinthians 4:17)
3. "While we
look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are
not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things
which are not seen are eternal."
( 2 Corinthians 4:18)
a. In Christ,
things and situations are subject to change. We have the power to
change our situation. God has given you a mouth to speak. Open your
mouth and declare God's word and watch things change (Proverbs
18:21).
4. "For we
know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we
have a building of God, an house not made with hands; eternal in the
heavens” (old man - new man). (2 Corinthians 5:1)
